L’avi s’havia mort i a ella, amb els seus vuit anys recent estrenats, li va tocar acompanyar la mare a buidar el pis on havia viscut un dels homes més importants de la seva curta vida. Sí que és veritat que l’últim any no l’havia pogut veure gaire perquè no parava d’entrar i sortir de l’hospital, però guardava entre els seus records les llargues tardes passejant, les històries que explicava i la seva olor, aquella barreja particular de colònia i tabac que tant li agradava.

Ara estava allà, veient la seva mare fer caixes i intentant arrencar-li algun somriure entre tants plors. Era una nena una mica més madura del que li tocava per la seva edat, potser perquè els seus pares sempre parlaven molt, potser perquè sabia escoltar i encara no havia trobat res que no li despertés un mínim interès. Tenia una set insaciable d’aprendre coses i això és el que la va empènyer a endinsar-se a les habitacions del fons del pis de l’avi mentre la seva mare es quedava al menjador, entre mocadors de paper, amb una caixa de cartró en un costat i una bossa d’escombraries a l’altra.

Tot estava molt fosc i hi havia el desordre habitual. Tot de piles de llibres s’amuntegaven des del terra cap al sostre formant columnes que sortejava mentre la seva imaginació la transportava a les aventures dels contes que el seu estimat avi li explicava abans d’anar a dormir. Estava trista però, d’alguna manera, ser allà, conscient que era l’últim cop, li donava un punt d’emoció que no volia emboirar amb llàgrimes. Tot al contrari, volia impregnar-se d’aquell pis, convertir els seus ulls en càmeres per retratar cada racó i cada objecte d’aquell espai per retenir en els seus records tot allò que la feien sentir a prop del seu estimat avi. De plorar, ja tindria tot el temps que volgués.

Als peus del llit, hi havia un bagul molt antic on sempre s’asseia quan anava a despertar l’avi els matins després d’haver-se quedat a dormir en aquell pis perquè els seus pares tenien un sopar o bé la mama havia d’acompanyar el papa en un dels seus viatges de feina.

Per últim cop, s’hi va asseure i es va quedar mirant fixament el llit. Els plecs que es formaven a la manta rebregada li van recordar la forma de l’avi estirat profundament adormit. Va tancar els ulls esperant que la imaginació portés a les seves orelles aquells divertits roncs. Se li va escapar un somriure.

Llavors, va sentir com uns copets a dins del bagul. Es va espantar. Va pensar que potser seria un ratolí o potser una cuca de les grosses. Al mateix temps, però, va rebuscar a la seva fresca memòria i no va saber recordar haver vist el bagul mai obert. Què hi havia dins?

Els copets persistien, fins i tot s’havien accelerat, mentre la seva curiositat innocent l’empenyia a aixecar la tapa. Si hi havia coses de l’avi, no podien ser dolentes. Aquest raonament va ser el decisiu per deixar de banda la por i obrir de bat a bat aquell antic bagul. Els copets van parar sobtadament. No sabia d’on podien provenir, només hi havia papers, més llibres i alguns objectes estranys que no sabia perquè servien. Justament, li va cridar l’atenció una mena de gerro metàl·lic. Estava brut i ple de pols però ella el va trobar preciós. Va pensar que se l’enduria. De sobte, aquells copets que havia sentit feia una estona van ressonar des de l’interior del gerro. Es va espantar i se li va caure a terra. Llavors, de dins, com si estigués vivint un d’aquells contes orientals que li havia explicat l’avi, va començar a sortir una columna tènue de fum mentre una intensa i agradable olor d’herbes perfumava l’habitació.

Es va fregar els ulls quan li va semblar veure la cara del seu avi entre les formes caòtiques que el fum projectava cap al sostre.

En aquell moment, va sentir la seva veu i sí, era ell. Si hagués estat qualsevol altre, s’hagués espantat i hagués fugit corrents cap a la mama, però no, era ell. El veia, el sentia i estava tranquil·la. Li va somriure i li va dir que havia vingut a dir-li adeu, a acomiadar-se de la seva estimada neta. Li va demanar que cuidés molt la seva mare i que no deixés mai de lluitar fins a extenuar-se per intentar ser feliç. Els problemes sempre hi serien. Ara potser era una baralla a l’escola o una profunda decepció perquè el seu millor amic havia deixat de ser-ho, però més endavant tot es complicaria.

La nena estava com hipnotitzada. Només movia el cap amunt i avall per dir que sí o bé de costat a costat per dir que no. Llavors, l’avi li va explicar el secret. Li va dir que en un dels seus viatges al desert, havia conviscut amb una tribu durant uns dies. Allà, va salvar la vida del bruixot de l’oasi on vivien perquè l’home es va ennuegar mentre menjava i la seva ràpida reacció fent-li un massatge a la panxa, davant de les cares de pànic de tothom, li va permetre treure l’os que li bloquejava la gola i no el deixava respirar. El bruixot, en senyal d’agraïment, va preparar una poció feta amb unes herbes molt úniques i li va fer respirar el dens vapor que sortia de l’olla bullent. Li va dir que viuria molts anys i li va assegurar que un cop mort, es convertiria en una mena d’esperit amb el poder fer realitat els desitjos d’aquells a qui estimava de debò.

Havia arribat l’hora i d’aquell gerro on havia guardat les restes de les herbes de la poció, que després de tants anys s’havien convertit en pols, ara ell hi emergia amb la determinació de materialitzar els desitjos de la seva estimada neta.

Llavors ella va aconseguir obrir la boca per parlar mentre les primeres llàgrimes li regalimaven galtes avall. Primer de tot li va dir que no sabia com de feliç se sentia de tenir-lo allà davant seu per poder-s’hi acomiadar. Li va explicar que l’últim any l’havia trobat molt a faltar i li va assegurar que estava convençuda que el trobaria molt més a faltar a partir de llavors.

Després de rumiar-s’ho molt, finalment, la nena, a l’oferiment de l’avi de poder fer realitat qualsevol desig, li va respondre: Res. Li va explicar que ella se sentia molt feliç, sentia que el papa i la mama l’estimaven molt, que vivia en una casa molt bonica i que tenia molts amics i amigues… Ho va pensar i ho va repensar però va arribar a la conclusió que no necessitava res, que tenia tot el que volia.

Si alguna cosa li hagués demanat era que ell, el seu estimat avi, no s’hagués mort però què hi podia fer? Era conscient que demanar-li aquell desig era impossible. Es van fer un fart de plorar tots dos vivint la intensitat de l’emoció més profunda d’estimar-se.

Va obrir els ulls de cop en sentir la mare cridant el seu nom des del menjador. Estava mig estirada a sobre del bagul d’aquella fosca habitació. S’havia adormit? No n’estava gens segura, tenia la sensació que el moment de comiat que havia viscut amb el seu avi havia passat de veritat. Tenia la cara humida i els ulls li pesaven com si s’hagués fet un fart de plorar. Li va costar, però finalment va aconseguir convèncer la seva mare perquè li deixés posar aquell pesat i vell bagul als peus del seu llit. Li va fer prometre que buscaria la clau per poder-lo obrir però que si, al final, no la trobaven, faria venir un manyà perquè l’obrís amb tota la cura del món.
