La porta sempre estava oberta. La sala d’espera de la consulta del Doctor Josep Bertran estava plena de gent des de primera hora del matí fins ben entrada la nit.

“Sort que l’Espluga no és massa gran” sempre es repetia el metge quan veia persones de peu esperant durant hores perquè els receptés unes pastilles o els cosís un trau al cap.

El silenci que es respirava en aquella sala era fruit de l’enorme respecte que el poble tenia per a una persona que es negava a portar un rellotge al canell per no descuidar ni un detall a l’hora d’atendre els seus malalts.

En alguna ocasió, era tal el silenci que el Doctor Bertran s’aixecava de la cadira del seu despatx a quarts de dotze de la nit per anar a sopar i descobria que encara hi havia quatre o cinc persones esperant ser ateses. “Que passi el següent” deia en un sospir de cansament. Ja feia temps que entre la gent de l’Espluga de Francolí es comentava que de tots els pacients, el més pacient era el mateix Doctor Bertran.

Aquell dia havia estat un d’aquells que ell batejava com a “vermells”. Un dia que no tenia temps per a res. No s’havia acabat el cafè de l’esmorzar que ja va haver de sortir corrents perquè una àvia havia caigut. No tenia aquella revolucionària màquina que li permetia fer radiografies però el seu ull clínic li va fer veure, sens dubte, que s’havia trencat l’espatlla.

Després va ser un no parar de visites d’urgència que el van fer anar amunt i avall per les masies del poble. Un “dia vermell”, al contrari dels calendaris, per al Doctor Bertran era un dia sense pausa. Un dia de no dinar, de no beure ni un got d’aigua i encara menys d’anar al lavabo.

Era impressionant la capacitat que tenia la gent del poble per comunicar-se, per fer córrer la veu, d’ajudar-se entre els veïns per localitzar-lo allà on fos i avisar-lo que aquest o aquell s’havia fet mal o bé li havia agafat un atac. A l’Espluga de Francolí, eren molt pocs que tenien telèfon i ell, tot i que era qui potser el necessitava més, no en volia perquè tenia por que es perdés aquell esperit.

Va arribar a casa de matinada. Estava esgotat. Una tènue llum al fons del llarg passadís li va cridar l’atenció. Els nens o potser la Maria se’l devien haver deixat encès.

En apropar-s’hi, va descobrir que hi havia algú a la sala d’espera. Era l’Enric Martí, un dels avis més vells de l’Espluga de Francolí. Li va preguntar si es trobava bé i l’home li va dir que estava millor que mai i que l’estava esperant només per donar-li les gràcies.

Feia temps que es visitava amb freqüència. Ara perquè orinava sang, ara perquè se li havia clavat l’esquena o bé perquè li rodava el cap fins a tal punt que no es podia ni aixecar del llit. Aquell dia, però, havia estat diferent. Havia guanyat la partida de dòmino al bar del poble. L’olor de l’escudella i peus de porc guisats el van convèncer per quedar-s’hi a dinar i quin tiberi! Després del “carajillo”, a més, s’havia sentit amb forces per anar fins a la Cova de la Font Major. Quants records… Era on anava amb la seva estimada Amèlia quan festejaven d’amagat perquè el pare d’ella no el volia veure rondant la seva filla. “Si les parets parlessin”, va dir amb un somriure entremaliat que deixava veure les dues úniques dents que li quedaven. Les llàgrimes van brollar gairebé a l’instant en parlar de la dona que tant trobava faltar. El metge que hi havia abans del Doctor Bertran no va veure que estava malalta fins que va ser massa tard. Ja feia gairebé trenta anys que havia mort i plorava com si fes pocs dies que era vidu.

Des de llavors, no havia posat els peus a la consulta d’un metge fins que el dolor no va ser del tot insuportable i allà es va trobar el Doctor Bertran. Un jove amb empenta, un somriure i una capacitat per escoltar meravellosa. Per fi aquell vell “matasanos” s’havia retirat. Se l’havia guanyat en poc temps i això que l’Enric no l’hi havia posat gens fàcil. Els últims deu anys, quan més necessitava un metge, no només havia rebut les millors atencions sinó que, a més, havia guanyat un amic. Per això, quan es va despertar de la llarga migdiada a dins de la cova, va sortir amb la necessitat d’anar a cal metge per donar-li les gràcies encara que fos de nit.

Va ser una conversa breu però carregada d’emocions. Es van acomiadar i, finalment, el Doctor Bertran va poder donar per tancat aquell dia “vermell”. No va tenir massa temps per descansar perquè l’endemà al matí, abans ni tan sols de tastar el cafè de l’esmorzar, el van avisar que havien trobat mort l’Enric Martí a dins de la Cova de la Font Major. En practicar-li l’autòpsia va veure clar que la causa havia estat un atac de feridura. En canvi, li van quedar molts dubtes a l’hora d’acotar una hora aproximada de la seva mort. Havia tornat a la cova en sortir de la consulta de matinada?
