«Creus que ets aquí però no és veritat… Ets allà». Aquella frase articulada per l’estranya curandera amb un to de maledicció rebotava per dins del seu cervell a tota hora. Ja podia estar concentrat cosint un trau al cap d’algú, receptant un calmant o bé simplement relaxant-se al saló amb un got de conyac a la mà a altes hores de la nit després d’un dia complicat. De sobte, la frase tornava a ressonar i feia callar qualsevol altre pensament… Què volia dir?
La vida, però, era prou complicada i tocant de peus a terra, fos aquí o fos allà, havia de resoldre qüestions menys metafísiques com ara buscar un ajudant que pogués exercir plenament en cas que tornés a estar indisposat. El càlcul renal que havia patit setmanes enrere era un avís claríssim. El fet de trobar-se malament havia deixat el poble sencer gairebé sense atenció mèdica. Sort en va tenir del metge de Montblanc, que es va quedar amb les urgències, i també de la paciència de la bona gent de l’Espluga de Francolí que van saber esperar sense transmetre-li el neguit col·lectiu que van patir durant els dies que el Doctor Bertran va estar malalt.
Només es va presentar un candidat. Semblava que els recent llicenciats no veien més enllà de l’esclavitud que suposava ser metge en un entorn rural i no tenien en compte que també hi havia coses bones com sentir-se estimat per tot un poble o com veure créixer els fills jugant al carrer i construint cabanes al bosc, lluny de les ciutats sorolloses i brutes on la vida per a una gran majoria anava acompanyada de misèria i sí, també d’esclavitud, com en el seu cas. La gran diferència, però, era que el Doctor Bertran havia triat aquella vida i no la canviaria per a res del món.
El Doctor Quim Ricart era un noi de vint-i-pocs anys, fill d’una família de pagès de Vimbodí. Els seus pares s’havien trencat l’esquena per pagar-li els estudis al seu fill i ara ell se sentia amb el deure de retornar tant d’esforç d’alguna manera. Havia de guanyar-se la vida i no massa lluny de casa perquè des que s’havia graduat que la salut dels seus pares havia fet una davallada molt forta. Semblava que haguessin estat esperant, resistint, fins que el seu estimat Quim es convertís en el Doctor Ricart.
El Doctor Bertran el va veure molt verd. S’havia de mossegar els llavis i carregar-se de paciència davant la fredor amb què tractava els pacients i, sobretot, pel fet que posés en dubte alguns dels seus diagnòstics perquè hi havia noves tècniques que qüestionaven el seu precís ull clínic, la principal eina del Doctor Bertran. Li agradés o no, aquell barbamec era l’única opció que tenia per assegurar un relleu a la consulta mèdica de l’Espluga de Francolí.
Aquell matí s’havia complicat. Per primera vegada es van haver de dividir. El Doctor Bertran va marxar ben d’hora cap a Reus per fer el seguiment d’una pacient que havia hagut d’enviar perquè la ingressessin. La Maria Geribert tenia una oclusió intestinal que no havia pogut resoldre amb laxants. Era qüestió d’hores. Si a l’hospital no se li desbloquejava el budell, s’hauria d’operar d’urgència i, per convèncer-la li va haver de prometre que en cas d’entrar a quiròfan, el Doctor Bertran hi seria present. Va ser l’última cara que va veure la Maria abans que l’anestèsia ho fongués tot al negre més absolut.
El Doctor Ricart es va quedar amb les visites a domicili dels matins i, amb tota seguretat, hauria d’assumir tot sol la consulta per la tarda. A primera hora del matí, amb la vella bicicleta, va anar a visitar el Mas Celestinu. Allà hi vivia una família molt humil que es guanyava la vida amb les oliveres i garroferes que tenien al tros. D’una manera o altra, sempre se les havien empescat per tenir un plat a taula tot i les dificultats però el nen, l’Agapitu, de nou anys, era tot pell i os. S’havia aprimat moltíssim en molt poc temps. Tenia la pell resseca i els llavis tallats. Veient el lloc on estava creixent la criatura i amb aquells símptomes, va tirar d’aquell ull clínic que tant defensava el Doctor Bertran i li va diagnosticar desnutrició. Havia de canviar la dieta de totes totes. Havia de menjar més i, en la mesura del possible, la carn, el peix, el pa i també els dolços havien de formar part dels seus àpats. Necessitava una dieta molt contundent per guanyar pes al més aviat possible. La poca energia que tenia la gastava en la creixença del seu menut cos i si no capgiraven la situació, a la llarga, de gran, podria arrossegar complicacions severes.
Va despatxar la visita en poc més d’un quart d’hora. Havia assumit l’agenda que faria el Doctor Bertran amb el seu cotxe. El repte era complir amb totes les cites previstes fent els desplaçaments en bicicleta. No va ser fàcil però va arribar a la consulta just a temps per dir bona tarda als primers pacients que arribaven a la sala d’espera.
L’Avelina estava acabant d’escombrar l’estança i el Doctor Ricart va trepitjar, sense adonar-se’n, la muntanyeta de pols que havia acumulat just abans d’empènyer-la cap al recollidor. La dona va deixar anar un renec en veure com escampava amb les seves sabatotes la porqueria per tot arreu. Hi passava molta gent per la consulta i mantenir-la neta com una patena no era una feina que es fes en un moment. El Doctor Ricart es va limitar a dir «que passi el primer» abans de tancar la porta.
Després d’esperar ben bé un quart d’hora, va treure el cap per veure perquè no havia entrat ningú i es va trobar la sala d’espera completament buida. Es va estranyar i va tornar a dins. Les hores passaven i la porta no s’obria. Era molt estrany. Des que donava un cop de mà al Doctor Bertran que totes les tardes, sense excepció, les visites a la consulta eren contínues. Havien d’anar per feina si no volien plegar a les tantes i, tot i així, en més d’una ocasió sopaven un rosegó de pa i un tros d’embotit passada la mitjanit.
«Quina tarda més curiosa» va deixar anar el Doctor Ricart quan va veure el Doctor Bertran tornar de Reus a última hora.
«Curiosa? El que és curiós és veure la cua de gent que hi ha al carrer esperant que jo torni. Es pot saber què has fet? Què els has dit? Ells no m’han explicat res però han entrat darrere meu i tenim la sala d’espera plena. Avui no sé si dormirem. Tenim feina Doctor Ricart»
No era gens habitual veure el Doctor Bertran amb aquelles males puces però en aquell moment, el jove metge va entendre que hi havia alguna cosa més enllà de la praxi professional que se li havia escapat. Va assumir el seu paper d’ajudant i va obeir les ordres del veterà sense dir res. Llavors es va adonar què no havia fet. El Doctor Bertran no només auscultava els pacients sinó que també els escoltava. Els preguntava per la família o per com tenien l’hort després dels aiguats de la tardor. Somreia o els feia un gest, petit, com agafar-los la mà, i sense ciència però amb una dosi extra d’humanitat atenia els seus malalts per curar-los.
De matinada, i amb tota l’energia a flor de pell fruit d’unes hores intenses malgrat el cansament acumulat, van acabar fent una copa al saló. El Doctor Bertran ja coneixia aquella sensació, sabia que no podria adormir-se. Tenia massa present la Maria Geribert. No se n’havia sortit. Havia de ser una operació molt senzilla però tot es va anar complicant des de bon començament. Es va posar a plorar. L’endemà hauria d’anar a parlar amb la família i la notícia els destrossaria. El Doctor Ricart va intentar consolar el seu col·lega. Mentre mirava de dir les paraules més amables que se li acudien va aparèixer del no res l’Enric Martí i li va dir a cau d’orella: «Hi ha algú que et vol veure»
Llavors va veure la Maria Geribert. Amb llàgrimes als ulls li va donar les gràcies per haver-la cuidat fins l’últim moment. Li va demanar que no se sentís culpable, que de vegades les coses no sortien bé i que sí, que morir-se amb quaranta-tres anys, amb nens petits i un marit que no servia per a res més que llaurar el camp, era un daltabaix però que se’n sortirien. Per això, li havia de demanar un favor. Els havia de fer arribar un missatge a la seva família. Tenia paraules per a tots i cada un i estava convençuda que sabrien entomar-les, entendre-les i seguir endavant sense ella.
El Doctor Bertran va fer un gest d’assentiment amb el cap i li va donar les gràcies al Doctor Ricart per les amables paraules que li havia dedicat tot i que no n’havia escoltat ni una. Li va demanar que marxés, que necessitava estar sol.
Ja feia temps que havia après a mentir, només una miqueta, però era més fàcil que explicar-li que tenia una reunió molt important amb dos fantasmes…
