En un primer moment, se li va ocórrer que potser havien tingut un accident amb el cotxe i que el seu cervell estava treballant a tot drap per fabricar aquella mena de somnis que deien que es viuen quan algú és entre la vida i la mort. Li va semblar l’explicació més raonable tot i que per a un home de ciència com ell el raonament li generava més interrogants que respostes.
Arrossegava els peus lentament entre runes, mobles tapats amb llençols blancs i una foscor que només es trencava per alguns porticons mal tancats.
«Hola! Hi ha algú? Soc el Doctor Josep Bertran. Voldria sortir d’aquí»

La Maria, l’Avelina, el seu estimat Rafael, com li hauria anat després de marxar de casa a mitjanit fugint de la Guàrdia Civil? En apropar-se també va veure-hi la Josefina, en Ramon i el seu petit Joanet, que ja no era petit, que s’havia fet molt gran i havia demostrat a tothom que néixer malalt no volia dir no servir per a res. Que maco estava. També hi havia en Baltasar Carbó i el seu fill Gerard. «Un moment, no havia mort el vell Carbó?» Li va preguntar a l’Enric Martí sense obtenir resposta. De sobte, un nen va travessar corrents el passadís. Era el petit Jaume Llorens. Ai, com havia fet patir la seva estimada Elisa aquell fantasma entremaliat, per sort, havien pogut resoldre el seu patiment. També va veure un home de mitjana edat que se li va apropar i li va dir: « Gràcies Doctor Bertran, vostè em va salvar la vida quan era un nen, quan em va atropellar un tractor»
