El timbre de la porta sonava amb una insistència inusual. O bé era una urgència molt greu o bé estava passant alguna cosa molt grossa. El fantasma de la guerra encara planava entre els records de tothom, petits i grans, i el Doctor Bertran, que l’havia viscut des primera línia, el tenia ben present. Sentia que el cor li feia un salt quan hi havia algun senyal al seu voltant que anunciés perill i aquella forma de fer sonar el timbre de casa seva no augurava res de bo.
En obrir la porta es va trobar amb un grup de sis guàrdies civils. No feia massa temps que el Rafael havia marxat. Es va témer el pitjor. Va intentar mostrar-se sorprès per no despertar sospites.
Després d’una breu conversa de cortesia, li van dir que se l’havien d’endur. Ell es va quedar blanc i els uniformats es van posar a riure: “No se preocupe, Doctor. No irá a la cárcel si no ha hecho nada malo. Venimos por su ciencia. La patria le necesita”.
No podien ser més inoportuns.Tenia el dia ple. Al matí, havia de fer visites per les masies del voltant del poble i per la tarda, a la consulta, no li quedava ni una hora per donar. Un altre dia vermell a l’agenda, d’aquells dies que pregava que no hi hagués cap urgència, i ara se’l volien endur no sabia on ni durant quant de temps.
Des de que s’havia quedat sense cotxe, feia les visites a domicili amb la seva vella bicicleta i això suposava un greu contratemps a l’hora de donar atenció als seus malalts més impedits. Per optimitzar els recorreguts, havia dibuixat un mapa de tota la zona dels afores de l’Espluga de Francolí a la paret d’una de les estances del costat de la consulta. L’ajudava a l’hora de planificar les seves visites i així simplificar al màxim els itineraris que havia de fer pedalant.
Els guàrdies civils el miraven fixament mentre ell estava palplantat a la porta en silenci rumiant com dir-los que no podia acompanyar-los. Un d’ells, el més jove, va fer un pas endavant i li va deixar anar “Vamos a ver, Doctor. No tenemos todo el día”. Va entendre que no tenia opció. Es va disculpar i va entrar per buscar el seu maletí. No sabia quina dolència havia de tractar ni qui era el malalt però sempre hi tenia una mica de tot en aquell petit equipatge que l’acompanyava a tot arreu.
Va anar a la cuina. La Maria estava preparant l’esmorzar mentre els dos petits rondinaven de gana. Ella es va quedar de pedra quan en Josep li va demanar que cancel·lés totes les visites perquè havia d’acompanyar aquells guàrdies civils que hi havia a la porta. No van dir-se res més però amb un intercanvi de mirades ja va quedar tot clar. L’Avelina, que planxava camises en un racó, es va apropar a la seva senyora i li va posar una mà a sobre de l’espatlla. La Maria es va posar a plorar mentre en Josep s’allunyava pel passadís conscient que aquell comiat podria ser el darrer. Corrien temps en què la foscor havia rebaixat a gairebé res el preu de les vides de les persones…
No van anar gaire lluny. De seguida va reconèixer l’antic balneari que hi havia molt a prop de Poblet. Durant la guerra s’havia convertit en un hospital militar i ara el règim hi estava invertint molt diners per arreglar-lo. No estava clar què en volien fer però estava vigilat com si es tractés d’una fortalesa.
Van passar tres controls abans no van accedir a l’interior. Un cop a dins, els sis guàrdies civils van acompanyar el Doctor Bertran fins al segon pis.
Els forats de bala, els vidres trencats de les finestres i les esquerdes de la recepció i les escales contrastaven amb les catifes i la decoració pomposa d’aquella planta. Semblava increïble que les dues imatges convisquessin sota el mateix sostre. Però sí, el segon pis semblava un palau.
El van dur fins a una de les habitacions. Envoltat del luxe més exagerat, hi havia un home estirat al llit. Va entrar i els guàrdies van tancar la porta darrere seu. El Doctor Bertran s’hi va apropar. Aquell panxut de mitjana edat li resultava familiar i, era més que evident, que havia de ser algú important.
Com si es tractés d’una broma de mal gust, l’endemà, més o menys a la mateixa hora que el dia anterior, els sis guàrdies civils trucaven a la porta de la casa del Doctor Bertran. En obrir, li van dir amb un somriure d’orella a orella que ja tenien els medicaments.
En arribar, es va trobar amb quatre caixes a la porta de l’habitació. Eren força grans. Estaven plenes d’antibiòtics. N’hi havia de tots els tipus que havia escrit a la llista. Realment havia de ser molt important aquell home. Amb totes les precaucions li va administrar una nova dosi i va prescriure una injecció cada vuit hores. En arribar a casa de nou, es va témer el pitjor quan els guàrdies civils es van acomiadar amb un “hasta luego”.
Ell i només ell li posaria les injeccions. Una forma evident de culpar-lo si no anava bé. La millora, però, es va començar a notar molt aviat. A les dues setmanes, el seu pacient li va explicar que era un dels ministres del règim i que havia de tornar a Madrid amb urgència. El doctor Bertran s’hi va negar perquè podia encomanar la malaltia a qualsevol que se li acostés. Ell era el primer que es moria de ganes de perdre’l de vista però era massa arriscat. Finalment, un mes després, amb totes les precaucions, i després de molt insistir el va deixar marxar. Ja no tenia febre i els esputs amb sang eren cada cop més puntuals. Li va dir que no podia estar en contacte directe amb ningú que no fos el seu metge fins que no tingués la certesa que s’havia recuperat. En acomiadar-se, el ministre li va dir: “Pídeme lo que quieras” però el Doctor Bertran, carregat d’orgull, li va respondre: “Gràcies, però res”. El millor regal era desempallegar-se d’aquell pacient incòmode i els seus guàrdies civils.
Tres mesos més tard, però, va tornar a trobar els uniformats a la porta de casa. En un primer moment va pensar que el ministre havia mort però el somriure que tenien dibuixat sota el bigoti va esvair aquesta idea.
“De parte del señor Ministro. Un Volkswagen Escarabajo último modelo. Recién llegado de Alemania”. Abans de dir-los amb tota la diplomàcia que se’l confitessin, que ja li havia dit a aquell panxut que no volia res d’ell, ja havien marxat. La Maria, el va abraçar per l’esquena i li va dir: “Ja pots guardar la bicicleta”.
