La relació entre en Baltasar Carbó i l’Enriqueta Muñoz havia fet aixecar molta polseguera al poble. No feia ni un any que ella havia arribat i ja s’havia emportat a l’altar un dels homes més vells i més rics de l’Espluga de Francolí.
Malgrat les males llengües que s’escampaven per tot arreu, semblava un matrimoni feliç va pensar el Doctor Bertran mentre obria l’agenda per repassar la següent visita. De sobte va sentir una mà que l’agafava per l’espatlla. Es va girar i va veure que era l’Enric Martí. El seu amic fantasma el mirava amb ulls de preocupació. Semblava que volgués dir-li alguna cosa important però que no sabés per on començar. El doctor el va mirar, va aixecar les celles amb un gest de pregunta i va anar a la sala d’espera per cridar el següent pacient.
No tenia son. Per fi s’havia estirat al llit però no podia dormir. Un dia més la tarda s’havia complicat i havia acabat sopant tot sol a la cuina a quarts de dotze de la nit. La Maria descansava profundament però en Josep no es podia treure del cap l’aparició de l’Enric Martí. Normalment quan aquell esperit es deixava veure era perquè hi havia alguna cosa que no anava bé i devia tenir a veure amb en Baltasar i l’Enriqueta.
Es va aixecar i va anar a la sala d’estar. Es va posar una copa de conyac. De tant en tant tenia un pacient amb les butxaques ben plenes que, a més de pagar, li feia un regal d’agraïment. A fora queia una bona tempesta. Els llamps il·luminaven esporàdicament la sala d’estar mentre els trons feien tremolar les parets.
De sobte, la finestra que hi havia just al seu davant es va obrir violentament. En Josep Bertran es va aixecar per tancar-la quan va veure la silueta d’una persona asseguda a la porta de casa seva. Llavors va tornar a sentir una mà a l’espatlla i en girar-se va tornar a veure l’Enric Martí que, sense dir ni una paraula, feia que sí amb el cap.
Va obrir la porta i la silueta es va posar dempeus d’un bot. Era en Gerard Carbó. El fill d’en Baltasar. El va fer passar i el va convidar a una copa. Estava clar que hi havia alguna cosa més enllà de la salut del vell.
En Gerard li va explicar que des que el seu pare havia començat a anar amb l’Enriqueta que la relació entre ells dos s’havia enterbolit. La primera dona d’en Baltasar, la Roser, la mare d’en Gerard, havia mort quan ell tenia dotze anys. Des de llavors que sempre havia ajudat el pare en tot. Des de portar les terres de la casa pairal fins a gestionar les propietats que tenien arrendades per tota la comarca. Ara, amb gairebé quaranta anys, havia aparegut aquella dona del no res i, amb aquell somriure que et desfeia, havia aconseguit apartar-lo de gairebé tot. Només li havia deixat les feines més dures del camp mentre el seu pare li deia que sí a tot a una nouvinguda que s’havia convertit en la seva madrastra tot i ser una mica més jove que ell.
El doctor Bertran va mirar de tallar la conversa perquè no entenia on volia anar a parar. Va ser llavors quan en Gerard va explicar-li que els últims dos mesos el seu pare havia fet una davallada de salut molt forta. Just va començar a trobar-se malament el dia que va veure el senyor notari marxant de casa seva amb presses. Havia intentat parlar amb el pare en diverses ocasions però sempre acabaven a crits.
Feia uns mesos que s’havia instal·lat en una masia propera a la casa pairal per evitar més discussions però des que havia marxat de casa que veia que el seu pare cada dia feia pitjor cara. Fins que no es va trobar molt malament, l’Enriqueta no l’havia portat al metge i això que ell s’havia ofert una infinitat de vegades. Finalment hi havien anat aquella mateixa tarda i per això estava allà, perquè volia saber si havia trobat res d’estrany perquè sospitava que la seva madrastra estava matant a poc a poc el seu pare. Llavors va començar a plorar desconsoladament. El doctor Bertran va posar-li una mà a l’espatlla i, en aquell mateix instant, l’Enric Martí va aparèixer per darrere d’en Gerard. No deia res. Es limitava a fer que sí amb el cap. Si no hagués estat per aquell coi de fantasma, s’hagués tret de sobre aquell home amb l’excusa que ell no podia ni volia ficar-se en els problemes d’una família que no era la seva.
«Soc un home de ciència i faré tot el possible per cuidar la salut del teu pare. Confia en mi». El va acompanyar fins a la porta de nou. La tempesta no havia afluixat però va veure com marxava en Gerard caminant amb tranquil·litat com si les gotes d’aigua no el mullessin.
A primera hora del matí es va presentar a la casa pairal. Va obrir la porta l’Enriqueta mig adormida i alhora sorpresa per la visita inesperada del metge. El Doctor Bertran es va desfer en excuses mentre explicava que s’havia oblidat de practicar-li una última prova a en Baltasar.
Tot just estaven esmorzant. L’Enriqueta li va oferir un cafè. En Baltasar va somriure en veure el Doctor Bertran aparèixer al menjador de casa. Es va asseure mentre l’Enriqueta marxava a la cuina. El Doctor Bertran va fer un cop d’ull ràpid a la taula. Pa amb tomàquet, llonganissa, formatge i olives. Un esmorzar generós que poca gent es podia permetre en aquells temps. Les dues tasses eren gairebé idèntiques. L’única diferència era que la d’en Baltasar estava una mica escantonada.
«Baltasar, vigili amb aquesta tassa que encara se’m tallarà i no estem per hemorràgies, per petites que siguin» i les va intercanviar. Un instant després l’Enriqueta va tornar amb el cafè pel metge. Van esmorzar tots tres tranquil·lament i en acabar el Doctor Bertran es va endur el vell a la seva habitació per fer-li aquelles últimes proves. No hi havien arribat que van sentir el soroll d’una tassa de ceràmica trencant-se en mil bocins en caure a terra.
Després de gairebé una hora explorant en Baltasar, el Doctor Bertran va deixar el vell descansant al seu llit. Va buscar l’Enriqueta per tot arreu per acomiadar-se però no la va trobar. En sortir, es va topar amb en Gerard. Estava suant i tenia la respiració entretallada com si hagués corregut força estona. «Acabo de veure l’Enriqueta caminant fent esses, com si estigués molt borratxa, a la sortida del poble. Portava una maleta a la mà. L’he cridat, s’ha girat i m’ha mirat amb cara de pànic i ha sortit corrents. Ha caigut i s’ha tornat a aixecar vàries vegades. Llavors he vingut cap aquí. Em temia el pitjor. Està bé el meu pare?»
«Sí. El teu pare està bé i en uns dies estarà millor, no et preocupis». Llavors l’Enric Martí li va dir al Doctor a cau d’orella: «el testament…». Amb el seu millor somriure, el Doctor Bertran va deixar anar «No em vull ficar on no em demanen, però de camí cap a la consulta, passo per davant de cal notari. Vols que li digui que us vingui a veure?»
