Aquell dia, però, tot es va complicar. La nena ja tenia cinc anys i estava passant per un d’aquells episodis que el termòmetre amenaçava en superar la marca dels 40. Era el límit que s’havia marcat per portar la seva filla a l’hospital.
Quan va tornar de fer les visites del matí es va trobar amb la Maria que feia aquella expressió de t’he d’explicar una cosa greu i no sé per on començar. “La nena, Josep, la nena”. El Doctor Bertran es va quedar glaçat abans que la seva dona no es veiés amb cor d’explicar el que havia passat feia ben poca estona. Estava preparant una mica de caldo quan de sobte va sentir un terrabastall terrible. Va sortir corrents i es va trobar amb la seva filla inconscient al peu de les escales. Havia caigut. Van ser uns segons d’angoixa. Per sort, no va trigar massa a obrir els ulls de nou. “El nen… Has vist el nen? On és el Jaume…” repetia una vegada i una altra l’Elisa mentre la seva mare la pujava en braços escales amunt per tornar-la a la seva habitació. Amb aquella febrada havia de descansar i més ara que semblava que tenia alguna mena de deliri veient nens on n’hi havia.
El Doctor Bertran va pujar els graons de tres en tres. L’Elisa dormia. Tenia la cara amarada de suor. Es va asseure al seu costat i llavors la nena va obrir els ulls de cop i va dir: “Ha estat el Jaume, papa. És un nen molt entremaliat. És més gran que jo i li encanta jugar a pilota”. En Josep li va preguntar qui era aquell tal Jaume i la seva filla li va explicar que feia poc que el veia per casa. Apareixia a la seva habitació i jugaven i xerraven abans de posar-se a dormir. S’havien fet amics però ahir a la nit s’havia enfadat molt amb ella perquè li va demanar que marxés perquè es trobava malament i necessitava descansar.
En Josep la va abraçar i li va dir que estigués tranquil·la, que el Jaume només existia a la seva imaginació. Va intentar explicar-li que a vegades el cervell podia fabricar coses que semblaven molt reals quan la febre era tan alta com la que tenia. Li va fer un petó al front i va sortir de l’habitació. Només creuar l’ampit de la porta es va trobar de cara amb l’Enric Martí: “Jo també soc fruit de la teva imaginació? Tens febres altes des de fa uns anyets?” El Doctor Bertran li va fer un gest amb la mà donant-li a entendre que no era el moment i va baixar les escales per anar a veure com estava la Maria.
Gairebé discuteixen. Estava molt angoixada. Més que per la caiguda, que al final només havien estat cops i hematomes, era aquella maleïda febre que no baixava. Per tranquil·litzar-la, li va prometre que li posaria una injecció amb un antipirètic molt contundent i que si no baixava la temperatura, l’endemà la portaria a l’hospital a Barcelona si feia falta. No tenia cap més símptoma i estava convençut que era un capítol de creixença més.
Va dinar d’una revolada i va anar cap a la consulta. Pel passadís, va sentir algú caminant darrere seu, tenia l’Enric Martí enganxat d’una manera que l’inquietava però va preferir ignorar-lo. No estava per fantasmes. En passar per davant del menjador, però, li va dir a cau d’orella “Mira, mira allà. Sota les cortines”. “Hi havia uns peus. Eren una mica més grans que els de l’Elisa però duien unes sabates de nen. Es va quedar glaçat. “Si em pots veure a mi, pots també pot ser que puguis veure el Jaume. I si et passa a tu, per què no a la teva filla?”
Tenia tota la raó. Sense respondre-li, va entrar a la consulta i va carregar una injecció amb l’antipirètic. Hi va posar una dosi d’adult. L’Elisa era molt petita però estava arribant a temperatures massa perilloses. Necessitava un tractament de xoc. L’endemà ja havia baixat a 38 i en tres dies tornava a córrer per casa com si no hagués passat res. Li va preguntar si havia tornat a veure en Jaume just després d’explicar-li el conte d’anar a dormir. L’Elisa va fer que no amb el cap. Es va girar per dir-li “T’estimo”, com cada nit just abans de tancar l’interruptor de la llum, i llavors li va semblar veure com una maneta de nen s’amagava precipitadament a sota el llit de la seva filla. Què havia de fer? Va tancar els ulls, va agafar aire i els va tornar a obrir. Llavors va veure l’Enric Martí mirant amb cara de pomes agres per sota el llit. El Doctor Bertran va apagar el llum i va dir-se en veu baixa: “Coi de fantasmes…”
