L’Elisa no parava de créixer. De seguida la roba li quedava petita i també les joguines, clar. Era una nena de jugar al carrer amb la seva colla. Recorrien els camps, feien cabanes al bosc, competicions enfilant-se als arbres… Sempre tornava amb un genoll pelat o una esgarrinxada al braç però amb un somriure d’orella a orella.

El tricicle també li havia quedat petit. Ja no podia pedalar amb aquella velocitat vertiginosa perquè amb prou feines podia encabir-s’hi. Les rodes llises deixaven ben clar la gran quantitat de quilòmetres recorreguts que acumulaven.

Amb una pena enorme, va decidir que havia arribat l’hora d’acomiadar-se de la seva estimada muntura amb la que s’havia imaginat que cavalcava pel salvatge oest mentre recorria els carrerons de l’Espluga de Francolí. A l’hora de sopar va arrencar a plorar quan va explicar a la mama i al papa que havien de llençar la seva estimadíssima joguina.

El Doctor Bertran no va trigar ni un minut a donar-li un motiu per somriure. Si volia, el seu tricicle no tenia perquè anar a parar a les escombraries. Justament, aquella mateixa tarda, havia anat a visitar una família que tenien un nen petit amb un principi de pulmonia. Feia poc que havien arribat al poble. Eren extremadament pobres. S’havien instal·lat en unes barraques que hi havia abandonades a tocar del riu. Va proposar a l’Elisa que el regalés a aquell nen. Estava convençut que el faria molt feliç.

L’endemà el Doctor Bertran i la seva filla petita van anar junts a visitar la família Bermúdez Soto. Ell portava al seu maletí la injecció que li havia d’administrar diàriament per salvar-lO. Ella portava el seu vell tricicle amb què li endolciria la vida un cop s’hagués recuperat amb tot d’aventures com les que ella havia viscut fins feia ben poc.

No tenien res per oferir-los en senyal d’agraïment més enllà de les paraules i les llàgrimes d’emoció que brollaven galtes avall d’aquella mare i aquell pare desesperats per viure entre tanta misèria. El nen, en Benito, amb prou feines es podia moure de la pila de sacs farcits de palla que feien servir com a llit, però li va canviar la cara quan va veure aquell tricicle vermell. L’Elisa li va dir que deixava el seu amic, el seu estimat cavall salvatge, a les seves mans. Que si el cuidava i l’estimava, segur que l’ajudaria a atrapar els dolents, a salvar els bons i a fugir de tots els perills que s’amagaven entre aquells boscos i camps. També li va dir que per pedalar necessitaria totes les forces i que per això, ara tenia un motiu més per recuperar-se.

En menys de dues setmanes, en Benito ja recorria amb el seu flamant tricicle vermell tot el poble. El Doctor Bertran no entenia com s’havia pogut refer tan ràpidament però la medicina, li havia ensenyat en més d’una ocasió que és una ciència inexacta. En qualsevol cas, la intuïció li deia a cau d’orella que aquell tricicle, d’una manera o una altra, havia influït en la sorprenent recuperació d’aquella criatura.

Amb l’arribada de l’estiu, els dies es van fer molt llargs, no hi havia escola i les criatures del poble es passaven el dia fora de casa jugant.

Una vegada més la urgència va caure a la consulta com una bomba. En Jepet de Can Roc havia tingut un accident amb el seu tractor. Havia bolcat com a conseqüència d’una maniobra estranya per no atropellar el petit Benito amb el seu tricicle. En Miquel Serra portava el nen en braços mentre que dos jornalers d’en Jepet portaven el seu amo agafant-lo per les espatlles entre tots dos. Va fer una primera exploració a tots dos. En Benito, a banda de blaus i cops per tot arreu, semblava que tenia una cama trencada mentre que l’home tenia un trau al cap i poca cosa més.

Primer va ser el nen. Li va posar la cama a lloc i després la va immobilitzar. Havia de fer-li molt mal però en Benito es mostrava sorprenentment tranquil. En Jepet, en canvi, estava molt nerviós, cridava contínuament a tothom, als seus jornalers, al nen i fins i tot al Doctor Bertran quan se li va apropar. Feia una pudor d’alcohol terrible. Va fer un intent d’examinar-li la ferida del front però veient l’estat d’aquell home li va donar unes aspirines i el va enviar cap a casa. L’home ja podia caminar tot sol. Era evident que si l’havien hagut de portar al metge entre dos no havia estat a causa de l’accident sinó de la borratxera que portava.

Aquella nit, el Doctor Bertran no podia dormir. Va baixar a la sala d’estar a prendre un conyac. Necessitava pensar. Només entrar ja va veure l’Enric Martí assegut al costat de la seva butaca. L’estava esperant i sabia perfectament la conversa que tindria amb l’estimat fantasma que vagava per casa seva.

L’endemà, amb els ulls ben petits per no haver descansat gens, el Doctor Bertran es va presentar a Can Roc amb l’excusa de veure com estava el trau d’en Jepet. Li va obrir la porta ell mateix. Van tenir una conversa breu però suficient per comprovar que ja devia haver buidat, com a mínim, una ampolla. A sobre, aquell homenot li va explicar que el tractor funcionava. Estava una mica destrossat, però aquell mateix matí havia pogut llaurar una part del tros sense problemes.

El Doctor Bertran es va deixar anar sense embuts. El volia denunciar a la Guàrdia Civil. Era un perill. L’endemà de l’accident, havia tornat a agafar el volant borratxo perdut i sense cap remordiment. Hauria pogut matar aquell pobre nen.

Aquell home el va mirar amb odi, es va aixecar i va fer fora el Doctor Bertran de casa seva de mala manera. Quan ja estava a punt d’entrar al seu Volkswagen Escarabat, en Jepet se li va apropar corrents.

“Si em denuncia, Doctor, puc tenir molts problemes. Ja he passat per la presó per altres motius. He viscut situacions molt complicades. Li prego, li suplico que no ho faci”

Li va dir somicant mentre es posava de genolls. El Doctor Bertran encara estava molt emprenyat però va veure la desesperació en els ulls d’aquell home.

“Vingui aquesta tarda a la consulta i parlarem. Si està borratxo, no es molesti ni a trucar la porta” – Va pujar al cotxe i va marxar.

A primera hora de la tarda, uns minuts abans que obrís la consulta, ja el tenia allà. S’havia posat el seu millor vestit, feia olor de colònia i, el més important, no feia pudor d’alcohol.

Després d’unes sentides disculpes barrejades amb la mala consciència, el Doctor Bertran li va fer una proposta. No el denunciaria però a canvi hauria de fer dues coses. Deixar l’alcohol i donar feina a la mare i el pare del nen. Res de caritat, un sou canvi d’un treball. En Jepet va acceptar sense pensar-s’ho dues vegades. Tot i que de les dues coses, una era molt fàcil i l’altra extremadament complicada.

Els pares del Benito van començar a treballar a Can Roc l’endemà. Ell s’encarregaria de la cura dels cavalls mentre que ella donaria un cop de mà a la seva dona en les feines de casa, la cuina, la neteja, les criatures…

Pel que fa a l’alcohol, els primers dies ho va passar molt malament. Sort en va tenir de les branques de regalèssia. Va ser idea del Doctor Bertran que li va proposar que busqués una cosa més saludable per consumir cada cop que sentia l’impuls irrefrenable de beure’s un tanto de vi, un carajillo o el que arreplegués. Es va arribar a desencaixar la mandíbula de tant rosegar però anava aguantant.

Dos mesos més tard, quan en Jepet ja havia superat el més difícil, la seva dona va caure fulminada. Tenia una salut de ferro fins que un dia, de cop, el seu cor senzillament va dir prou. Quan va arribar el Doctor Bertran només va poder certificar la seva mort.

Aquella mateixa nit, de matinada, uns cops a la porta van despertar el Doctor Bertran. La imatge dels dos jornalers arrossegant en Jepet es tornava a repetir. Havia begut tant que havia perdut la consciència. El Doctor Bertran el va fer vomitar fins que va quedar buit completament i llavors li va posar dins la boca una xeringa sense agulla amb una solució de bicarbonat de sodi i sucre perquè no es deshidratés. Llavors va demanar als jornalers que el pugessin a una de les habitacions del pis de dalt perquè dormís la mona.

Es va passar la nit discutint amb l’Enric Martí. Aquell coi de fantasma insistia que havia d’anar a denunciar-lo a la Guàrdia Civil mentre que el Doctor Bertran preferia donar-li una última oportunitat. Hi va haver força tensió entre tots dos i van arribar als crits. De sobte, van sentir un cop de porta. El Doctor es va acostar a la finestra i va veure en Jepet de Can Roc caminant com podia cap a la foscor del fons del carrer.

L’endemà a primera hora, el va despertar la Guàrdia Civil. Quan li van dir que havia d’acompanyar-los per a l’aixecament d’un cos que s’havia trobat al riu, va saber que es tractava d’en Jepet. Havia mort ofegat, però el que no podria saber és si va ser un accident o bé un suïcidi després de sentir el Doctor Bertran cridant tot sol però com si discutís amb algú sobre si l’havia de denunciar o no.
