Va rebre una nota veu d’un vell conegut que feia anys de qui no en sabia res. Com li devien anar les coses? Es queien bé però sense adonar-se’n havien deixat de trucar i s’havien distanciat. La va escoltar. Li va reconèixer la veu de seguida. Després d’uns primers segons d’ «Hola, com estàs? Com et va tot?», va canviar el to de veu. Va agafar un ritme pausat i li va començar a recitar una mena de poema. No entenia res. A què venia tot allò? Tenia pressa, havia de marxar a la feina i va decidir que ja s’ho escoltaria a la nit abans de dormir.
Estirat al llit, després d’un dia molt complicat, amb reunions, bronques i tensions, finalment va trobar el moment per escoltar amb atenció aquella estranya nota de veu. Entre el cansament que duia a sobre i les paraules relaxades que sonaven pels auriculars va entrar en una mena de letargia entre el son i la vetlla. Allà, just en aquell punt, el seu cervell va fer un clic des del costat més fosc de la seva inconsciència.
Laforma com estava recitat, aquell estrany poema, tenia una dolçor tan embriagadora que el van deixar impressionat. Va sentir la necessitat urgent de fer el mateix i va reproduir amb les seves pròpies paraules aquella meravella que li havia obert les portes d’una sensibilitat fins aleshores desconeguda. Va enviar una nota de veu a tots els seus contactes sense excepció.
L’endemà va tornar a ser un dia com qualsevol altre. Només s’havia llevat amb el cap una mica emboirat i tenia un record tèrbol de la nit anterior. No tenia clar què havia passat i què havia estat un somni fins que va comprovar que havia reproduït aquell misteriós poema i l’havia reenviat a tothom que tenia arxivat a la carpeta de contactes del telèfon mòbil.
La següent nit va rebre una nova nota de veu d’aquell vell conegut. De nou, amb un tempo pausat, li parlava de coses que estaven passant. De coses que podrien canviar per fer una vida una mica més amable per a tothom. De les causes dels problemes que feien viure les persones amb por per a un futur més que incert i al final, sense perdre la dolça musicalitat del to de veu, continuava recitant nous versos d’aquell meravellós poema que li havia fet palpitar el cor d’una manera diferent. No s’ho va pensar dues vegades i de nou va reproduir aquell missatge, adaptat amb les seves paraules, en una nova nota de veu i la va reenviar a tots els seus contactes.
Es va convertir en una mena de joc. Es passava el dia esperant que arribés la nit per rebre el missatge que continués amb la màgia d’aquells versos tan bonics que li parlaven d’un món millor on els de casa, els que tenien les arrels profundament clavades en aquella preciosa terra, feien un pas endavant carregat d’èpica per recuperar el seu lloc, un lloc que la gent vinguda de fora els havia anat prenent a poc a poc.
Les notes de veu aprofundien cada dia més en aquell discurs. De forma suau però sense pausa i amb aquell to embriagador, explicava com els avis de les ara persones adultes havien visitat els zoos humans del segle passat on veure una persona amb la pell negra, groguenca o bé amb els ulls estirats era una curiositat d’allò més exòtica. Aquell divertiment ja feia anys que havia derivat en un problema perquè tots aquells éssers estranys ja feia temps que havien deixat de ser-ho. Ja no eren dos o tres que venien en un vaixell després d’un viatge de mesos travessant els oceans. Arribaven en milers, per terra, mar i aire literalment, i omplien les aules de les escoles, els hospitals i els serveis més bàsics obligant als que ja hi eren a compartir allò que era seu perquè havien nascut allà, en aquella terra.
Un dia va sortir al carrer per anar a treballar i es va trobar que no hi havia ni una ànima. On era tothom? Va fer uns passos en direcció cap a l’estació de metro quan va sentir que unes bales li passaven xiulant molt a prop de les seves orelles. Es va tirar a terra i va arrossegar-se fins a amagar-se darrere d’un cotxe aparcat. Va aixecar el cap com va poder i va veure que com ell hi havia molta més gent parapetada en el primer que havia trobat per refugiar-se d’aquells trets d’origen incert.
Pel mig del carrer va veure avançar un autobús amb uns altaveus enormes que feien sonar aquells versos dolços que ja feia nits que escoltava, reproduïa i reenviava cap a tots els seus contactes. Aquella veu, dolça i calmada, li va fer relaxar tots els músculs que tenia en tensió. Va perdre la por a les bales que feia uns instants l’havien obligat a refugiar-se i va sortir caminant amb la intenció de pujar a l’autobús. Com ell, centenars de persones que hi havia en un dels carrers més cèntrics d’una gran ciutat com la seva, a primera hora del matí, van esborrar els trets de la seva memòria i es van dirigir cap a l’autobús.
Les bales provinents des de diverses finestres dels grans edificis que hi havia als dos costats d’aquella gran avinguda van abatre desenes de persones mentre les altres caminaven serenament cap aquell autobús que prometia que les coses podien canviar, que la vida d’abans, quan no hi havia tants colors entre els veïns, era més bonica i més fàcil.
Els altaveus explicaven que les persones de bona fe, les que havien sabut escoltar aquells versos que feia dies que circulaven per les xarxes, eren les que ara estaven morint en aquells instants quan apropar-se i pujar a l’autobús per a un futur millor era un risc per a les seves vides.
Ell caminava decidit, tenia la porta a un centenar de metres. Sentia la força d’estar convençut que feia falta un canvi radical, un cop de timó a anys de deixadesa general per part dels governants i de la ciutadania. Havia après a conformar-se cada cop amb menys, a acceptar que la situació era la que era i que no podia fer-s’hi res. Ja n’hi havia prou. Sentia que la força d’aquelles paraules tan ben tramades en dolços versos passaven per davant de tot, fins i tot, de la seva vida. Sí. Feien falta sacrificis i ell era allà, disposat a donar-ho tot per deixar un llegat una mica millor als que encara havien de néixer. No tenien perquè haver de pagar els errors de les generacions anteriors. No seria just.
«Desperteu! Desperteu!» van dir els altaveus com a colofó de mitja hora de matança. De sobte, les desenes de supervivents a aquella mena de desfilada macabra al voltant de l’autobús de la mort es van aturar. Van començar els crits, el pànic i les corredisses. La gent trucava desesperada amb els telèfons mòbils per demanar ajuda. Les sirenes dels serveis d’emergències es van allargar durant la resta del dia per tots els carrers de la ciutat. Una vintena d’autobusos acompanyats per franctiradors perfectament ubicats al llarg del seu itinerari havien omplert de sang les voreres de tota la capital.
Aquella mateixa nit, la ira es va desfermar. Milers de persones van sortir als carrers i van assaltar els albergs i les entitats socials que treballaven per donar un cop de mà a les persones que arribaven de països que feia temps que havien col·lapsat en busca d’un futur, ni millor ni pitjor, senzillament un futur.
Els disturbis es van repetir una nit per setmana durant mesos. Tots els dimecres. S’organitzaven escamots nocturns que sortien de cacera per la ciutat en busca de negres, «moros o xinos» i, si de camí, es topaven amb alguna persona sensellar també rebia encara que moltes vegades, sota la brutícia, la seva pell tinguessin el mateix color.
Els governants, una vegada més, no van saber reaccionar i el temps va acabar fent aflorar la llavor que feia temps que s’havia plantat en l’interior de tantes persones. Els qui havien començat enviant dolces notes de veu als seus contactes van arribar al poder perquè havien trobat la manera d’inocular hipnòtiques paraules en milers i milers de cervells de persones.
Ho van aconseguir, el país es va buidar d’immigrants. En pocs anys, l’economia es va esfondrar perquè la gran majoria de la població era vella. L’esperança de vida s’havia allargat massa anys i al mateix temps no hi havia un mínim de naixements que en un futur fessin créixer professionals que treballessin per finançar les pensions de milions i milions d’avis i àvies que, anys enrere, havien rebut unes notes de veu i s’havien vist empesos a sortir al carrer per fer fora tots aquells negres, «moros i xinos».
