Mai abans havia estat en un notari. Era un despatx entre elegant i decadent exactament com l’home que el regentava que estava en perfecta sintonia amb l’espai. Es va imaginar que ja devia néixer vell i que des de ben petit portava les ulleres a la punta del nas com en aquell mateix moment que li llegia unes paraules tan estranyes com sorprenents.

Ningú més de la família n’havia volgut saber res. Ell era l’últim, i sí, tenia l’opció de renunciar-hi també, però si deia que no, l’estat es convertiria en propietari de tot i això no li feia cap gràcia.

No era culpa seva ser el nebot d’un fill de puta que havia decidit assassinar la seva dona… El cas era que, segons deia aquell home elegant i decadent, ell es convertia en el propietari de tot, incloent la casa on es va perpetrar el crim.

Ell era un mort de gana que feia anys que encadenava feinetes i sobrevivia com podia per arribar a final de mes. Ara, de sobte, un cabró amb qui no tenia contacte des que els records eren més o menys nítids havia decidit matar la seva companya per després suïcidar-se i deixar-li tot a ell.

D’un dia per l’altre, es convertia en l’hereu d’una sucosa fortuna començant per aquella enorme i sinistra casa on havia passat tot.

El primer que va pensar era que havia de vendre-ho tot per liquidar amb hisenda els sagnants impostos que es derivaven pel fet d’heredar sense ser un descendent directe del finat. No en volia saber res d’aquell malparit. Els assessors, però, de seguida li van intentar treure aquella idea del cap perquè qui compraria una casa on s’ha produït un assassinat? Havia sortit als diaris i tota la ciutat n’anava plena.

Cansat de compartir pis amb desconeguts i després de fer uns quants números va arribar a la conclusió que li sortia més a compte anar-hi a viure encara que també hagués de passar per caixa amb hisenda. No parava de repetir-se que en pocs dies es trauria del cap totes aquelles sensacions fosques i viuria, per fi, una mica millor.

No va poder aclucar ni un ull la primera nit. Qualsevol soroll l’alterava i en una casa vella, remodelada però vella com aquella, n’hi havia molts. Es va aixecar per anar al lavabo i va haver de caminar a les fosques pel passadís perquè l’interruptor, que havia funcionat al vespre, s’havia quedat clavat de matinada. Es va girar diverses vegades perquè tenia la sensació que algú estava a punt de tirar-se-li a sobre per l’esquena. Una suor freda li regalimava front avall acompanyada per un batec frenètic. No parava de repetir-se que tot eren imaginacions seves però se sentia observat. De tornada al llit, va dir-se a si mateix que devien ser els protagonistes d’aquells sinistres quadres que el seguien amb la seva tètrica mirada.

No va tenir millor sort a la segona ni a la tercera nit i això que havia tret totes les pintures del passadís. Dormia períodes curts, de com a molt mitja hora, fins que es despertava quan tot just se submergia en el primer son.

La quarta nit es va prendre una pastilla i va aconseguir dormir però no va ser el que s’esperava. Va tenir un malson constant i recorrent on veia una dona ensangonada arrossegant-se cap a ell mentre li demanava ajuda. Darrere seu, una figura fosca avançava amb un pas lent però segur. Ell intentava posar-se pel mig, evitar el que semblava inevitable, però els seus peus, per molt que es moguessin, no avançaven ni un mil·límetre i llavors es despertava cridant.

A la cinquena nit ho va tornar a intentar amb la pastilla però el malson es va repetir fil per randa. A la sisena va decidir provar de dormir sense cap ajuda química. Estava esgotat i el seu cervell començava a obsessionar-se amb el crim que havia comès el seu oncle. Els veia per tot arreu, a a ell i a la seva dona. Una vegada i una altra la seva imaginació li recreava de mil maneres diferents l’assassinat. Tampoc va aconseguir descansar.

A la setena nit no va aguantar ni dues hores, el temps que va trigar entre reunir les forces per estirar-se al llit i acabar sortint al carrer cridant desesperat.

A primera hora del matí, va trucar el seu advocat per proposar-li aquella idea boja:

“ES VEN CASA AMB FANTASMES INCLOSOS”

Així començava l’anunci que va aparèixer a la premsa local una setmana després. El preu era una mica per sota de mercat i s’explicava de forma molt breu la truculenta història que s’havia produït entre aquelles quatre parets.

Les trucades no es van fer esperar. Per filtrar els tafaners o la gent que s’avorria, demanava que es pagués una fiança per fer les visites. Sorprenentment, hi va haver molt d’interès.
