Tothom li tenia por. Malcarat, contínuament de mal humor i parlant només amb monosíl·labs. A la feina era el millor, era capaç de fer el que ningú més podia fer perquè ja feia anys que treballar havia posseït la seva vida. Els seus companys i companyes l’admiraven però no l’envejaven perquè tenien altres motius, lluny d’aquells despatxos, per sentir, o almenys intentar-ho, les pessigolletes màgiques a la panxa que els feien gaudir, ni que fos un moment, de la felicitat. No podien entendre que ell, a la seva particular manera, també les sentia.

Un dia, aquella mena d’ogre virtuós que tanta por feia va decidir treballar completament sol. Estava cansat de tenir persones al seu voltant que intentaven donar-li un cop de mà però que al final tot s’acabava amb un «deixa’m fer a mi» perquè ell no podia suportar que li fessin perdre el temps. La millor ajuda era que el deixessin tranquil.

El director, però, veia que ell no donava a l’abast i li havia dit una vegada i una altra que necessitava algú ni que fos perquè li fes les feinetes més rutinàries per descarregar-se una mica de tanta pressió.

Un dia, cansat de la seva permanent negativa, li va plantificar una altra cadira al seu despatx i hi va fer seure l’últim que havia entrat a l’oficina. L’únic que aquell ogre encara no havia devorat amb les seves males cares, trucades en hores intempestives, gestos despesctius i un llarg etcètera que l’havien convertit en una de les persones amb més mala reputació de l’empresa. Havia aconseguit convertir-se en el millor i el pitjor al mateix temps.

L’ajudant es va asseure a la cadira amb certa por. No es podia treure del cap les mirades de tots els altres companys que, sense dir gran cosa, el compadien amb aquells cops a l’esquena. No havia treballat amb l’ogre però havia sentit tantes històries sobre ell que tenia tot el cos en tensió mentre esperava que, en un moment o altre, s’obrís la porta i tinguessin el primer conflicte. Era com la calma tensa que es respira al front just abans de començar la batalla, una forma bonica per dir-se a sí mateix que estava cagat de por. Amb un contracte temporal, hi tenia molt a perdre i poc a guanyar. El cabró del director havia apostat per ell per estalviar-se la bronca dels més veterans de l’oficina. Amb aquell recent arribat no tindria mala consciència a l’hora de donar-li la raó a l’ogre i acomiadar-lo per incompetent.

Finalment va arribar l’ogre i per sorpresa seva no va dir-li res. S’esperava algun renec, fins i tot algun crit, a mode de benvinguda però va fer com si no hi fos. Va entrar amb la seva maleta amb rodetes carregada de papers i es va asseure a menys d’un metre d’ell i es va posar a escriure a l’ordinador ignorant-lo completament.

L’ajudant es va armar de valor i li va dir: «Bon dia». L’ogre, sense aixecar el cap de la pantalla, li va donar uns papers i es va limitar a respondre-li: «Mal dia». L’ajudant es va mirar aquella muntanya de factures rebregades i, a falta de rebre una ordre, es va posar a endreçar-les i va crear una taula amb l’ordinador on en desglossava tots els detalls. Al final de la jornada, abans de marxar li va enviar per correu la feina que havia fet.

L’endemà quan va entrar l’ogre, a primera hora de la tarda, el va saludar. Portava tot el matí esperant-lo però ja l’havien advertit que aquell home era més aviat d’hàbits nocturns. El dia següent, l’ajudant va començar a aparèixer per l’oficina després de dinar per coincidir més amb ell. No li feia cap il·lusió, però si havien de treballar plegats, més valia que s’hi adaptés una mica i així evitar malentesos que acabessin amb conflicte. Sabia que el seu marge d’error era zero.

En pocs dies, l’ogre no només el saludava amb un «Bona tarda» sinó que, de tant en tant, fins i tot somreia en veure’l. Creuant les paraules justes, van començar a establir rutines de treball que, per sorpresa de tothom, permetien que la prevista explosió d’aquell despatx s’anés demorant setmanes que van acabar sent mesos i que, finalment, no va passar mai.

Va arribar un dia que es va adonar que ja tenien converses fluides. S’havia establert certa confiança. Fins i tot, en algun moment, la complicitat havia permès alguna tímida broma entre ells. Va descobrir que aquell ogre tenia un enorme sentit de la ironia i que quan volia deixava anar el seu l’humor, li resultava gairebé impossible frenar l’atac de riure. La primera vegada, mentre ploraven tots dos de riure, l’ogre, que no se li escapava res, va obrir de cop la porta del despatx i va enxampar quatre companys amuntegats que els estaven espiant atrets per la curiositat d’aquella sorprenent situació. Ell els va fulminar amb aquella mirada de menyspreu que tanta mala fama li havia fet guanyar i tots quatre van fer-se fonedissos mentre murmuraven excuses per intentar maquillar l’evidència.

Sovint la nòvia de l’ajudant li deia, entre riures, que no sabia si era pitjor haver-lo de compartir amb una amant o bé amb aquell ogre que el trucava a mig sopar i el tenia mitja hora al telèfon per un tema de contractes o gestions que, per descomptat, podien esperar-se a l’endemà.

Van ser uns anys en què l’ajudant va aprendre moltes coses de l’ogre. Li va dir que el seu contracte temporal estava a punt d’acabar-se però li proposava fer-lo indefinit amb una millora important en el sou. El motiu? Li va deixar anar que havia aconseguit una cosa que ningú havia fet abans. L’ogre només havia entrat al seu despatx dues vegades en tot l’any. La primera va ser per dir-li que no volia aquell ajudant inexpert i la segona havia estat tot just la setmana anterior i va ser per dir-li, gairebé amenaçar-lo, que no se li acudís no renovar-li el contracte.
