Estava viva. Després de més d’un any lluitant contra la maleïda malaltia escoltant bates blanques dient-li que no se’n sortiria, ho havia fet. Curada. En una de les pitjors nits, entre deliris en ple infern, es va fer l’absurda promesa que recorreria el país de punta a punta caminant en roba interior si la vida li donava una segona oportunitat.

Ja feia dos mesos que havia començat el seu peculiar pelegrinatge. Havia passat llargs dies fent camins i carreteres, travessant pobles i ciutats, veient com anar pel món amb calcetes, sostens i una motxilla despertava reaccions d’allò més desagradables: Insults, riures i fins i tot hi va haver qui va interpretar que la seva indumentària volia dir que buscava sexe. Ella, simplement, continuava caminant endavant. No tenia perquè donar explicacions.

Un dia, en plena ruta, se li va torçar el turmell. Es va posar a plorar, però més que pel mal, pel fet de pensar que seria un contratemps en el repte de complir la seva promesa. Va arribar com va poder fins al següent poble. Necessitava ajuda però ara hauria de fer el cor fort per aguantar els comentaris de la gent, el remei de seguir caminant no el podria aplicar en un temps.

Es va asseure en un banc de la plaça. Estava esgotada i tenia el turmell inflat com una pilota. Va tancar els ulls buscant un moment per recuperar forces. Llavors va notar una presència, un vell s’havia assegut al seu costat. Mira que hi havia bancs lliures. Es va posar en alerta a l’espera de l’insult o del comentari obscè.

-Sembla que la lluna plena coincidirà amb el Dia Gran de la Festa Major. Això és molt mala senyal, sempre ha passat alguna desgràcia al poble.

Ella se’l va quedar mirant amb sorpresa i va decidir seguir amb la conversa. Van estar mitja hora xerrant de tot i de res i el vell en cap moment la va jutjar pel fet d’anar pel carrer en roba interior. Per un moment es va pensar que potser era cec però quan li va preguntar pel seu turmell li va quedar ben clar que aquell avi hi veia perfectament. La va acompanyar a cal doctor i va insistir a deixar-li el seu bastó perquè pogués caminar. Durant el trajecte li va demostrar que el necessitava molt més ella.

A l’altre costat de la porta els va aparèixer un somriure. Això d’anar a veure un metge no li feia gens de gràcia, ja n’havia vist prou els últims temps. Es va trobar amb un home amable que tampoc no va fer-li cap pregunta i el més important per a ella: No duia bata blanca. Després de fer-li una cura bàsica li va dir que havia de fer repòs i que el millor era instal·lar-se a la fonda. Ella, sense entrar en detalls, li va explicar que no podia, que la seva promesa només li permetia dormir a la tenda que portava a la motxilla. El metge li va suggerir que acampés en el camp del costat de casa seva, que era propietat d’un pagès i que estava segur que no hi posaria cap inconvenient.

Quan va sortir de cal doctor, es va trobar a la porta dues noies jovenetes que l’estaven esperant. Li van portar la motxilla mentre ella s’anava familiaritzant amb les crosses. Eren les filles del pagès i, novament, no li van fer cap comentari sobre el seu aspecte. Començava a sentir-se estranyament còmoda. Li van muntar la tenda i van marxar.

Es va estirar i es va quedar profundament adormida. El so d’un motor apropant-se la va despertar de sobte. Ja era de nit, potser havien passat dues o tres hores. Va fer el gest d’aixecar-se quan la fiblada del turmell li va recordar que havia d’anar amb molta calma. Va obrir la cremallera de la tenda i es va trobar un home de mitjana edat somrient. Què passava en aquell poble que tothom somreia?

Era el cambrer de la fonda i l’havien enviat a buscar-la perquè la convidaven a sopar. Abans que ella s’hi negués, va dir-li que les nits allà eren especialment fredes i que tot el poble estava amoïnat per ella. Com a mínim, havia d’anar-se’n a dormir amb un plat calent a l’estómac. Un plat calent… Feia tant de temps que no en menjava un que la seva panxa la va empènyer a aixecar-se gairebé de forma involuntària.

Al menjador de la fonda no hi cabia ni una agulla. Tot el poble devia ser-hi. La mestressa va sortir de seguida a rebre-la i la va acompanyar fins a la seva taula.

En qüestió de minuts li van portar una cassola amb una sopa que gairebé es podia menjar amb forquilla i ganivet. Només tastar-la, va sentir com un sonor ronc emergia del seu interior reclamant-ne més.

Estava deliciosa, tenia un gust que li resultava molt familiar. Després de tres cullerades, va cridar la mestressa i li va preguntar la recepta de la sopa. La dona li va dir que no li podia explicar i llavors ella, amb els ulls tancats, va anomenar un per un tots els ingredients. La propietària de la fonda es va quedar amb la boca oberta i quasi va caure de cul a terra quan aquella dona en roba interior li va dir convençuda que si li afegia un raig de vinagre balsàmic abans del punt d’ebullició encara milloraria més.

Després d’escurar la cassola, es va aixecar per anar al lavabo. Asseguda a la tassa va sentir una música i, en sortir, en lloc de tornar a la seva taula, va aferrar-se a les crosses i va buscar la melodia pel passadís que donava accés a les habitacions de la planta baixa. Va obrir una porta i va veure com una desena de músics callaven sobtadament i se la quedaven mirant amb sorpresa. La van fer passar i li van dir que estaven assajant per al concert del Dia Gran de la Festa Major. Ella els va demanar que seguissin tocant. Al tercer tema, no va poder evitar agafar una pandereta que hi havia per terrar i marcar el ritme d’aquelles alegres cançons. Els músics, sense deixar de tocar, van donar-li la benvinguda a la banda amb una mirada i un somriure. Més somriures.

Mitja hora més tard, van interrompre l’assaig per anar al menjador. Ella els va seguir al seu ritme i allà, en aquell petit escenari, es va trobar l’avi que estava parlant. Amb un posat solemne, va repetir allò que ja havia sentit, que la lluna plena coincidiria amb el Dia Gran de la Festa Major i que allò només volia dir desgràcia.

Entre mirades de preocupació la gent va començar a especular sobre quin podia ser aquell desastre. El botiguer, que era un boig de la meteorologia, va dir que estava convençut que era una tempesta. La Festa Major sempre es feia a la vora del riu i, si plovia molt, el nivell de l’aigua podia pujar sobtadament. Llavors van ser els més vells que van recordar que hi va haver una terrible riuada quan eren petits.

Durant dues hores, el poble sencer, tancat a la fonda, va viure un intens debat. Tenien tres dies per replantejar-ho tot. L’alcaldessa va oferir el poliesportiu de l’escola per instal·lar-hi l’envelat. El pagès va posar a disposició de la festa el tractor i el remolc per traslladar-ho tot. Tothom va posar a sobre de la taula temps, mans, eines i coneixement per canviar la ubicació de la Festa Major.

Van acabar abans del previst. Ella, tot i les crosses, va poder ajudar organitzant un taller de manualitats per a les criatures mentre els seus pares i mares treballaven sense descans per replantejar la Festa Major.

Un sol espatarrant lluïa el matí d’aquell Dia Gran. Els dubtes sobre aquella terrible tempesta planaven entre tothom però ningú gosava dir res. Ho havien fet i tindrien una Festa diferent però la tindrien. Això era l’important. No va ser fins a mitja tarda quan van aparèixer sobtadament uns núvols negres. La gent gairebé es va posar aplaudir per donar-los la benvinguda però tenien una cosa més important per fer.

Tot el poble, vestit de gala, estava al pavelló ballant quan van començar a caure els primers ruixats. L’esclat d’alegria va multiplicar l’ambient de festa. Tothom estava feliç i ella, asseguda en una cadira, aplaudia seguint el compàs de la música. Els músics la van convidar a pujar a l’escenari i li van donar la pandereta. Des de dalt l’escenari, va veure com la mestressa de la fonda apareixia amb una olla immensa. Li va picar l’ullet i amb les mans li va donar a entendre que hi havia posat un raig de vinagre balsàmic a la seva famosa sopa. De sobte, els llums es van apagar, la música es va aturar i tothom, sense excepció, es va despullar fins a quedar-se en roba interior. No calia dir res, amb un somriure va ser suficient. La festa va continuar fins la matinada mentre el riu sortia de mare i destrossava tot el que es posava al seu pas.
